Receiver (back)

The chip in the middle is a PIN photodiode amplifier.  The reference signal comes in through the microstrip on the top flex part and is mixed in with the received signal.  The white box is a passive RF mixer.  The output of the mixer is low-pass filtered, amplified, and sent to the ASIC.
