Step generator

A fast step generator. This is simply a 555 timer producing a square wave of about 100Hz, driving a mercury wetted reed relay. This type of relay has no contact bounce and closes very quickly. The output is pulled up with a resistor and discharged through the relay.
The relay was salvaged from an old PBX box.
